Burstow Park School

Careers

As part of our careers and opportunities offer to pupils, we plan to invite a range of local and national company representatives to visit us at Burstow Park School.

Visit from Ringway

On Wednesday 11th December our students were visited by representatives, including 3 apprentices, from the highway services company, Ringway.

Students were given the opportunity to prepare a model road, ahead of roadworks taking place. Using miniature road cones, road signs and barrier fencing, the students worked together to ensure an area of the road could be fixed safely by the construction operatives, as well as ensuring road users were given timely warning of road works taking place.

Another activity required one student to act as the site supervisor, reading instructions carefully and providing steps and information for the other students in their team, who worked together to fix a broken gulley.

All students who took part learnt a great deal about the roles and responsibilities on offer at Ringway and there were great questions asked about the Ringway apprenticeship scheme.

Visit from Balfour Beatty

On Friday the 18th October our students were visited by representatives from the construction business Balfour Beatty.

They listened to a presentation about the roles, responsibilities and important work carried out by Balfour Beatty and learnt about  a variety of jobs.  These ranged from painting white lines on roads to operating drones to view wide areas of the land before, during and after a road or bridge has been built.

After the presentation, the students then had the opportunity to operate and fly a drone for themselves. We have some very skilful drone operators in the making at Burstow Park School and perhaps the visit has inspired some of our students to consider a career in construction in the future.
